Mother inspires Coral Gables Realtor in Real Estate and Community Service

Looking at the growing number of local parent-child Realtor teams in South Florida, Christopher Zoller can’t help but think about how he got his start in the business. Zoller’s mother, Leticia, spent 20 years selling real estate in Fairfield, Conn.

“My mother was my first real estate mentor, and probably my best,” said Zoller, who has been practicing real estate for 42 years and is the 2015 Residential President of the MIAMI Association of REALTORS® (MIAMI). “I still remember some of the basics my mother and her partner taught me early on. She was definitely an excellent role model.”

Zoller’s love for real estate has carried him on an interesting journey that saw him collect real estate licenses in four states (Florida, Connecticut, New York, and South Carolina) and one Caribbean island (St. Thomas). His deep real estate background helped him secure a position at EWM Realty International, Inc. in Coral Gables, where he has worked for the past 27 years. Zoller specializes in custom properties for South Florida commercial and residential clients. Zoller’s clientele includes local and international residential customers, investors and luxury home owners, small and medium businesses as well as large corporations.

“I’ve always been fascinated by structures, whether they’re houses or hotels or office buildings,” Zoller said. “I really like finding the buildings that people need and the homes people use.”

Zoller said his mother encouraged him to get into real estate. One day, she heard him negotiating a deal with a fishing supply company, and told him he should look into selling homes. While still a college undergraduate in Connecticut, Zoller got his first real estate license in 1973. In his twenties, Zoller served on the Greater Fairfield (Conn.) Board of Realtors.

Zoller ended up picking up real estate licenses in Florida and South Carolina after a Knoxville, Tenn., real estate company asked him to sell homes in those states. In 1980, he got an opportunity to manage and sell property for a firm on St. Thomas.

While selling St. Thomas real estate, Zoller opened a dinner theater and had a TV show called “Island Insight.” In 1988, Zoller returned stateside to Miami to work in one of the nation’s premier real estate markets. In 2009, Zoller was named the MIAMI Residential Realtor of the Year. Today, he serves on the City of Coral Gables’ Code Enforcement Board. In the past, he has served the City of Coral Gables on the Property Advisory, Budget and Finance, and Transportation Advisory boards. He is a past chairman of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce.

“My biggest passion about our business is the desperate need for professionalism,” Zoller said.

He believes in Miami’s ability to continue to attract domestic and global real estate investors. Miami’s position as a global hub, outdoor lifestyle, clean air, and sunny weather will perennially make the area a popular international destination, he said. Zoller is proud to be the 2015 Residential President of the nation’s largest Realtor association. MIAMI has more than 35,000 members.

“I’m really kind of tickled and pleased to see how many children and in some cases grandchildren of Realtors are getting into the business,” Zoller said. “In my office alone, I know of four or five cases where a parent is working as a team with or mentoring their child. It’s the same at RE/MAX, Coldwell Banker and Keller Williams. I continue to see more young people following their parents into this business. It’s a great opportunity. It reminds me of how I got started.”
