A Family that sells Real Estate Together, Stays Together

by | May 15, 2017

Even as he excelled in Hialeah youth baseball leagues and later as a Hofstra University (N.Y) first baseman, Alberto Carrillo knew his life would return to real estate.

When you’re a Carrillo, it always does.

Alberto’s mother, Maria, is a 30-year Miami Realtor and one of the most successful in the industry. Alberto’s father, Pedro, is a lender and mortgage broker. Alberto’s older brother, Pedro, is a New York City commercial Realtor.

“Real estate is in my blood,” Alberto said. “It’s what we do.”

The 35-year-old Alberto might be new to the profession, but his real estate acumen and community service is making his family proud. The 2017 MIAMI Association of REALTORS® (MIAMI) Young Professionals Network Chairman, Alberto runs RelatedISG International Realty’s downtown Miami and South Beach offices.

Alberto is known for helping new agents succeed. He mentors Realtors at his firm and volunteers countless hours to MIAMI YPN, which hosts training seminars, networking events and presentations for individuals new to the industry. It is an important MIAMI council. Nationwide, 87 percent of agents nationally leave the industry within five years.

“Since we started in real estate a few years ago, we know how hard it is to make it,” Carrillo said. “MIAMI YPN looks to make it easier for Realtors to succeed. There are growing pains as you go into any new industry. What we want to do is let new agents know, ‘Hey, you’re not alone.’”

Chasing the Baseball Dream

Before he started selling homes, Alberto was busy smashing home runs. As a boy growing up in baseball-crazed Hialeah in the early 80s, you couldn’t escape baseball.

“Baseball was it for him. He loved it,” Maria Carrillo said. “I never thought he or his brother would take the real estate road. Never.”

Miami’s Hialeah neighborhood has the highest percentage of Cuban and Cuban-American residents of any city in the United States (74 percent of the population) and Cubans love baseball.

A tall first baseman/pitcher, Carrillo stood out in the Hialeah youth baseball leagues.

Hialeah is known for producing baseball talent. Washington Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez, Baltimore Orioles star third baseman Manny Machado, Detroit Tigers Alex Avila and Kansas City Royals left fielder Peter O’Brien grew up in Hialeah.

Alberto played at Florida Christian School in Miami before playing one year at Hofstra University on Long Island, N.Y.

Joining the Family Career

Even as he excelled in baseball, Alberto kept an eye on real estate. His first job was in a real estate office. Alberto was just 15 years old when he worked at his mother’s real estate office.

His job was to map out the locations of his mother’s appointments. The office used MLS Passport, an obsolete system (“Oh, no. I’m dating myself!” Alberto said.)

He’d confirm appointments with clients and even travel with his mother to some. He’d see how happy buyers would get upon seeing a potential future home.

“It was a cool experience to be there to see how happy and how nervous people get as they researched their biggest investment,” Alberto remembered.

When his mother opened a brokerage in 2005, Alberto decided to fully immerse himself in the industry. He got his real estate license and was off showing homes to clients.

Meanwhile, his brother was doing the same thing in another major city. Pedro graduated from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., before launching his commercial real estate career in New York City.

Yes, the Carrillos have New York City and Miami real estate covered.

“We’re taking over the world,” Alberto said with a laugh. “Now, we just need Los Angeles.”

A Mother and a Role Model

No matter how successful Alberto and Pedro are in real estate, they still trail their mother.

Maria Carrillo — who holds the Certified Residential Specialist designation earned by fewer than 3 percent of Realtors — is one of South Florida’s top producers. She had 52 transactions in 2016.

“No way are we going to catch her,” Alberto said with a laugh. “She works harder than we do. We’re working on it, though. We’re building our database so eventually we will. But for the time being we’re going to let her have her shine.”

All joking aside, Alberto said his mother inspires him every day. Maria Carrillo serves on the 2017 MIAMI Residential Board of Governors and is the person who set the example for Alberto to donate his time to the MIAMI Association of REALTORS® (MIAMI).

“I’ve been blessed by this industry and it’s one of the reasons why I’m so active in our board,” Maria Carrillo said. “I feel I have this responsibility to this business that has been so good to me and my family. Alberto and his brother share that. It makes me proud because giving back is important.”

The family, believe it or not, rarely talks about the market.

Alberto said he often travels to New York City to visit with his brother. He marvels at how they took different paths to the same industry.

“I don’t know if my parents intended to pass real estate to their children, but it happened and we love it,” Alberto said.
