Miami’s Top-Rated Hospitals Attracting New Residents

by | Oct 05, 2016

Print Version

Patients from all over the globe come to Miami because Miami offers top-rated hospitals, nationally-regarded physicians, a multilingual community and a growing health information technology hub.

Miami, which is home to the second largest health district in the United States, has significantly improved and added to its health facilities in recent years. More additions are coming such as the under-construction Lennar Foundation Medical Center— an ambulatory center on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus— and the Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute.

When it opens in 2017, the Baptist Miami Cancer Institute will be one of only a few in the nation to offer proton therapy, an advanced treatment that beams radiation directly to tumors.

These additions are not only growing one of America’s largest healthcare hubs, but they are attracting more jobs, diversifying the local economy, reinvigorating local medical tourism, launching new healthcare startups and encouraging more residents to relocate here.

When a region offers state-of-the art healthcare, people from all over the world want to travel there for treatment. Because of its multicultural, multilingual population, Miami’s physicians and health facilities are ready to treat the world. South Florida’s proximity to Latin America, top-rated medical institutions, world-class spa resorts, beautiful parks and all-year sunny weather makes it the perfect place for treatment, recovery and relocation.

Miami’s Growing Health District
Miami is home to the second largest health district in the United States after Houston. Miami has three globally recognized research universities (the University of Miami, Florida International University and Barry University), eight hospital facilities, 33,000-plus beds, a fast-growing life sciences hub and more than a dozen research institutes.
Baptist Health South Florida is the region’s largest not-for-profit health care organizations. Baptist manages seven hospitals in Greater Miami: Baptist Hospital of Miami, Baptist Children’s Hospital, Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute, South Miami Hospital, Homestead Hospital and West Kendall Baptist Hospital.

Baptist, which originally opened with its original Kendall campus, has experienced remarkable expansion in recent years. Baptist now offers hospitals in Coral Gables, Homestead, Tavernier, South Miami, and West Kendall. It also has more than 30 outpatient and urgent care facilities throughout South Florida.

Baptist’s International Center of Miami is one of the largest hospital-based international programs in the country, featuring multilingual staff trained to personally assist patients with medical and travel needs. Annually, Baptist Health System sees more than 12,000 international patients from 100 different countries, not including those seen through telehealth technologies.

Other top-tier Miami health care organizations include Mercy Hospital, Mount Sinai Medical Center, Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami Health System. The latter is home to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, which is one of only four in the state to earn a state-designated Cancer Centers of Excellence program, and the only center of excellence in South Florida.

Miami’s healthcare offerings extend beyond county lines. Broward and Palm Beach counties also have top-rated health facilities, budding medical device firms and fast-growing life science research companies.

The highly-regarded Scripps Research Institute, a private non-profit research organization engaged in basic biomedical science opened a facility in Jupiter in Palm Beach. Stryker Mako, which has a cutting-edge robotic arm-assisted technology for knee procedures, has an office in Broward.

Miami’s Top-Rated Hospitals
Miami’s hospitals regularly receive top national, regional and state awards.

Miami Children’s Hospital is South Florida’s only licensed specialty hospital exclusively for children. The 289-bed hospital is regularly ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the nation. The hospital has 40 pediatric subspecialties within its main campus.

Four Baptist facilities ranked among the best regional hospitals on the latest U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospital” rankings. Jackson’s Holtz Children’s Hospital registered among the top children’s hospitals in the nation, according to the same report.

UHealth’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has ranked as the No. 1 eye hospital in the nation for 15 consecutive years.

Miami’s Expanding Health IT Hub
While still young in its maturation, Miami’s health information technology hub has seen significant growth in recent years.

Miami’s multicultural, multilingual community as well as its natural attributes (all-year sunny weather and centralized location between Latin America and the eastern U.S. seaboard) has attracted many entrepreneurs and innovators.

Startupbootcamp, for instance, chose Miami for its first U.S program. Startupbootcamp is Europe’s largest business accelerator operating in eight countries. It received $2 million from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to open in Miami. Startupbootcamp’s goal is to support and scale Miami digital health startups.

Using Miami’s position as a top-rated healthcare and talent hub, Startupbootcamp plans to bring 10 companies a year to Miami for the next three years and support them with its six-month acceleration program.

Other companies have launched at the University of Miami Life Science and Technology Park, a 252,000-square-foot building in the Miami Health District that houses research organizations.

Medical Tourism’s Impact
The aforementioned expansion of Miami health facilities means more local options, better treatment and a more significant medical tourism field. As the Gateway to the Americas, Miami is seeing more patients use the region’s top-rate medical institutions and then decide to stay.

The growth in healthcare facilities is also a boon to the local economy as more jobs and industries are added to one of America’s most dynamic cities.
